BRM Rules & Guidelines

General Rules

  • BRMs are not races. There are no prizes for fastest finishers.
  • Riders must be self-supported. No drafting behind motor vehicles, no support cars following.
  • All riders must carry the brevet card and get it signed/stamped at each control point.
  • Riders must follow all traffic laws of the UAE.
  • Minimum age to participate: 18 years.

Equipment Requirements

  • Helmet — Mandatory for all riders at all times.
  • Lights — Front white light and rear red light mandatory. Must be used from sunset to sunrise and in low-visibility conditions.
  • Reflective vest/clothing — Mandatory for night riding sections.
  • Bicycle — Must be human-powered only. No e-bikes or motor-assisted bicycles.

Control Points

  • Control points are locations along the route where riders must check in.
  • Each control has an opening and closing time based on average speeds.
  • Arriving before the opening time requires waiting; arriving after closing time is a DNF.
  • Proof of passage: brevet card stamp, receipt, or photo as specified by the organizer.

DNS / DNF

  • DNS (Did Not Start) — Registered but did not appear at the start.
  • DNF (Did Not Finish) — Started but did not complete within the time limit.
  • DNF riders must inform the organizer and are responsible for their own return.

UAE-Specific Guidelines

  • Carry adequate water — desert conditions require 1L per 30-40 km minimum.
  • BRM season typically runs October through April when temperatures are manageable.
  • Summer events (if any) will have early morning starts (3:00 AM - 4:00 AM).
  • Riders must carry a mobile phone with UAE emergency numbers saved (999 Police, 998 Ambulance).
  • Riding on highways/motorways is prohibited. Routes use secondary roads and cycle tracks.
